Portable TV and the Haier HLT717

By Richard Fisher • Oct 8 2009, 4:39pm

This story actually starts with a DVD Audio player! DVD Audio is a defunct HD audio format from 2001 (along with SACD) that brings the master recording to your home. Unfortunately the DVD forum and mastering houses failed in execution of this new standard making many of the titles auto play for multi-channel only, not stereo; an irritating premise for a 2 channel audiophile minimalist requiring a video monitor to navigate the menus to the stereo tracks. Indeed, DVD Audio listening time was few and far between due to this hassle.

What my DVD Audio world needed was an inexpensive, small LCD display with quick and convenient disconnects...

Mitsubishi LT-46148 LCD HDTV - On the Test Bench

By Richard Fisher • Mar 19 2009, 4:06pm

This portion of the review details how the Mitsubishi LT-46148 LCD HDTV performed on the test bench. Please read the Mitsubishi LT-46148 LCD HDTV Review Essentials, if you have not already.

RGB 0-255 can't pass below black because black is 0. Unfortunately the same goes for YPbPr 16-235 yet with that video signal black is 16 so it could if designed to do so. Bottom line, no below black signals will pass. While not a severe error, it is one that Videophiles should take note of since some small portion of consumer video content will exceed 16 or 235 by a few notches and an ISF calibration would setup a display to account for that anomaly. This one...

Mitsubishi LT-46148 LCD HDTV - Review Essentials

By Richard Fisher • Mar 18 2009, 4:29pm

LCD has come a long way since just a few years ago, taking over the flat panel market up to about 50" in screen size. While Mitsubishi is far better known for rear projection DLP since the demise of CRT, market forces can't be ignored and consumers remain spellbound by the flat panel concept in their homes. Let's see what Mitsubishi has to offer and how their LCD products compare.

Since last year Mitsubishi has offered 40", 46" and 52" models and the LT46148 is part of their current line of 1920x1080 displays.

Sony KDL-46XBR4 46 inch LCD HDTV

By The HT Guys • May 20 2008, 4:23pm

The TV looks visually appealing and has a high build quality. There is a clear plastic frame that goes around the TV. The TV weighs 84 pounds (38 Kg) with the pedestal and measures 49.7" (126 cm) wide by 31.3" (79.5 cm) high by 17.7" (32 cm) deep (4.8" (12 cm) without the pedestal). We immediately took the TV off the default setting and changed it to cinema. Cox cable looked very bad. So bad that we recommended switching to satellite. Braden has Cox as one of his sources so his impression was that Cox does not look that bad on his TVs. It could be that this TV does not do well with compressed sources. OTA HD looked much better. In general OTA digital channels looked better than the SD coming from the Cox cable box.

We then popped in a Blu-ray disc...

Pioneer Elite Pro-950HD 42" Elite Kuro Plasma TV

By The HT Guys • Dec 18 2007, 3:30pm

We recently did a review of the Pioneer Elite PRO-150FD 60" Plasma TV back in November (Podcast 224) so when Pioneer offered us the 42 inch model we weren't sure that we wanted to review a TV that was so similar. Since the TV was 720p we decided that it was different enough to warrant a review.

Pioneer Elite PRO-150FD 60" Plasma TV

By The HT Guys • Nov 16 2007, 4:00pm

When I went to CEDIA last September one of my favorite demonstrations was the Pioneer Elite Kuro plasma TV. Today we take a look at this TV and help you decide if you want to convince Santa to load this monster in his sleigh. The first thing you notice about the TV is how large and black it is. It measures 57-15/16 x 34-23/32 x 4-13/16 inches (WxHxD) without the stand and it weighs in 122 pounds without speakers. The speakers are optional and can be added onto the sides of the panel. It looks beautiful and the fit and finish are very nice. Its so black when its off. Actually, loosely translated Kuro, means deep blacks in Japanese and the TV delivers on its name. More about that later.

Westinghouse TX-42F430S 42" 1080p LCD HDTV

By The HT Guys • Sep 26 2007, 11:12pm

A few weeks ago we learned that most consumers put a heavier emphasis on cost than any other specification when selecting an HDTV. So we decided to obtain and review a TV that can be considered a value brand. While not the cheapest TV on the market today the Westinghouse TX-42F430S is definitely a value for what you get. This Westy has many of the cool features that the more expensive tier 1 TVs do and a couple that they don't....

Panasonic TH-50PZ700U

By The HT Guys • May 30 2007, 3:52pm

We just reviewed the Panasonic TH-50PX75U, which comes with a street price of $2100 a few shows ago. We loved the TV, but it's still a 720p model. We got a ton of email asking why we were living in the past, why we would have anything to do with a 720p plasma when the new 1080p model, the TH-50PZ700U, is already available. To be perfectly honest, we didn't have much luck getting our hands on one of the 1080p sets, so we went ahead with the 720p. Add on the fact that we still really like the 720p set, and our minds were made up. But not to turn a deaf ear to our loyal listeners, we tried our best to find a way to review the 1080p model. By the way, the extra pixels add up to a street price of $2900.

Panasonic TH-50PX75U 50 Inch Plasma TV

By The HT Guys • May 22 2007, 2:00pm

Back in January of this year we reviewed the Panasonic TH-50PX60U and were impressed with what we saw. At that time we had three things we didn't like about the TV. Today we take a look at Panasonic's new 50 inch 720p plasma, the TH-50PX75U, which comes with a street price of $2100 and addresses the three nit picks we had with the earlier model. This is a 720p TV with a resolution of 1366 x 768, a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, two HDMI inputs, and an SD card reader. One of the issues we (mainly Ara) had with its predecessor was its silver bezel. The 50PX75U comes with a thin black bezel that hides the speakers very well and looks quite good even when its off. Rounding out the features, the TV come with built-in ATSC/QAM/NTSC Tuners. Build quality is quite good. The product dimensions are 47.7 x 3.8 x 31.3 inches and it weighs 89.8 pounds which is almost identical to the previous model.

Samsung LN-T2332H 23" LCD HDTV

By The HT Guys • May 3 2007, 7:43pm

There's an old adage that says "never shop at Costco when you're hungry." If you do, you'll typically walk out of there with way too many snack foods. We'd like to extend that adage to include "never shop at Costco when you've got an HDTV itch." It's just way to easy to walk out of there with a new television. That's exactly what happened to Braden a few days ago. He was at Costco, because, well who doesn't want to go to Costco? And of course, needing a new HDTV, happened upon the Samsung LN-T2332H 23" LCD HDTV. Having passed finance committee approval (the finance committee was waiting in the car), the set has since made a great addition to the Russell family abode. At a price of $499, how can you go wrong?

Mitsubishi 65 inch 1080p DLP (WD-65831)

By The HT Guys • Apr 17 2007, 3:45pm

If you have listened to this show for more than a couple of months you know that Ara has purchased a 65 inch Mitsubishi DLP WD-65831 $2950 online. Many will remember the journey that got him there. He looked at the SONY SXRD, JVC HD-ILA, and he even toyed with buying the Samsung LED based DLP. In the end, one Saturday afternoon while hanging out in a Magnolia store he saw the Mitsubishi and decided it was that TV that was going into the Media Room.

JVC HD-61FN97 61" 1080p HD-ILA HDTV

By The HT Guys • Mar 26 2007, 8:31pm

We've talked about the JVC HD-ILA (Buy Now)rear projection HDTVs for a long time. In fact way back in Episode 11, on June 9 of 2005, we picked a 720p JVC as our favorite in a shootout between JVC, Mitsubishi and Samsung. Those were the days. TV technology has come a long way since then, but JVC is still a very solid performer, and one of our favorites. In fact, Ara has mentioned that his brother has a couple of them. We finally got one in our HT Guys testing facility - also know as our family rooms - to test it out for ourselves. But would it live up to our expectations?

Toshiba 42HP66 42 inch Plasma TV

Samsung HL-S5687W DLP TV Review

By The HT Guys • Dec 1 2006, 8:51pm

Today we take a look at the Samsung HL-S5687W 56" Widescreen 1080p DLP ($2100 at a Big Box Retailer)). The TV has the newer color wheel that is supposed to be faster, bigger, and quieter. According to Samsung this will provide a smoother picture, even with fast motion, with more accurate color. The TV's main features are...
